I recall a brief conversation that I had with a judge many years ago when I was fairly new to the law enforcement profession about how so much was expected of us who are in law enforcement, more so than most any other profession or line of work, including politicians, lawyers, etc. This judge was known to be strict but fair; he actually was a kind person, a very wise man. His sentiment was, "Well, SOMEBODY has to be better; thank goodness for you and your fellow officers." I took this to heart and never forgot what that judge said. I always kept his words in mind when my day was not-so-easy and did my best to uphold the high standards that were expected of me throughout my career. I'm certain that Sgt Friday would have approved. While some of what he was speaking about is dated, such as the overtime and the size of the police department, much of what he said to the young man is still true today.
